Good article, definitely think Oppenheimer is gonna sweep the major awards, and about Greta Gerwig not being nominated. I also think there was a lack of love for Godzilla Minus One for foreign film, I absolutely loved that movie, unexpectedly very affecting, and for Zac Efron for The Iron Claw. TMNT Mutant Mayhem should’ve been nominated for Animated Film also, that was a blast.
Alas, Godzilla Minus One was never eligible for the Best International Film Oscar, no matter how much buzz it was building. A film can only be nominated in that category if it was the official submission from its country of origin. Japan submitted the drama "Perfect Days" instead, which did get nominated! Maybe it'll win!
If it's any consolation, if Godzilla Minus One wins Best Visual Effects - which it very well might - the film's director, Takashi Yamazaki, will take home an Oscar. It would be the first time the director of a nominated movie won the Best Visual Effects Oscar since Stanley Kubrick won for 2001: A Space Odyssey!
Thanks for the clarification, been watching the Oscars since I was a kid and never realized a foreign country can only submit one film for consideration.
Cant believe Greta Gerwig and Celine Song lost out for Best Director :(
We still got a long way to go recognizing Women-led films.
