Dolly De Leon's performance in Triangle of Sadness was snubbed sadly (so close) and could have been a moment of triumph for Filipinos. Is it because the Best Supporting Actress category already has 2 Asians on them, or the fact that they already nominated a lot of Asians this year?
Truth: “It continues to be weird to me that the Academy only allows five Best Director nominations but more than five for Best Picture. How does it think these films are getting made?”
Kosinski not being nominated is a huge bummer. Maverick’s draw WAS the filmmaking -Oblivion is one of my all time fav sci fi movies- Uh, wow, by reading your article I just now realized I haven’t seen Wakanda Forever yet... htf did that happen? I sat here stunned a bit... I think I decided to rent it after The Filmcast review. Anyway great insights as always, Dave! Thanks for all you do.
First of all -I was a bit shocked not to see Claudio Miranda in the Cinematography category. More of? It would have been nice for someone like Charlotte Wells or or Sarah Polley to get into the best director line up.
Less of? All the “snub talk” How about the academy expands it’s actor and technical slots the way they did with Best Picture? Why not have 10 actors nominated? 10 directors? Why does it have to be 5? Make it 6!
What I wish I would see more of in the coverage of the nominations is writers putting their money where their mouths are, especially when it comes to talk of "snubs." There are not a limitless number of slots in every category and therefore if someone feels that a certain movie or person should have recieved recognition I would find it interesting to hear what they would substitute. I know it's highly subjective but I think it makes for a more intersting discussion.
So for example, if Viola Davis gets a best actress nomination, who would you like to see removed from the list? Blanchett, de Armas, Riseborough, Williams or Yeoh?
"...in a year where he relied on his old tricks to help keep an ailing industry alive and turned in a moving performance (playing a guy who relied on his old tricks to keep an ailing industry alive)..." Never would I have thought to turn Top Gun Maverick into a metaphor for the movie industry. Well done!
Mia Goth not being nominated for her performance in Pearl is my biggest disappointment. Her performance throughout the entire film is fantastic, but those final five minutes alone are deserving of a nomination in my opinion.

Decision to Leave didn't get the international feature nomination. I was rooting for it!
You really need to watch Come and See. I felt the style of All Quiet on the Western Front was heavily influenced by it and it's a much better film.

I can think of at least two names on that list I would definitely remove! (And everyone will have their own)
Tough hit on de Armas! No, but I get it and it is yet one more proof point that I need to get myself in gear and check out The Woman King.
I’m just sad that After Yang has gotten no love ;(

Zero love for NOPE. I don’t understand how that’s a thing.

Agreed, she was incredible.
TY for recommending All Quiet! Just finished and loved it. I thought Felix Kammerer was remarkable
