I can’t help but draw a bit of a line between Duncan Jones and Neill Blomkamp. Very promising sci-fi directors that started to hit in the aughts but their careers failed to take off after their early success.

I ultimately enjoyed Gran Turismo much more than I thought I would when I caught an early screening last week, after the initial hump of the film that mostly felt like a PlayStation commercial. But I hope David Harbour got a good massage after carrying this film on his back.

Actually, I think you've got the wrong metaphor. Jann is Blomkamp. Blomkamp was a nobody just making his own little short films and got plucked by Hollywood to make big-budget "real" films. This film is his District 9 phase. Over the next decade, he never wins another race and becomes Jack.
