The cellphone epidemic has been true of every festival I’ve attended in the last ~5 years. It’s mind boggling the lengths people will go to attend world premieres of films when they clearly don’t even like watching them.

I’ve started to see this bad smartphone behavior creep into the Ptown Film Fest (that I’ve been attending for 20 years), and the Boston Indie Fest, but not to the extent you describe at Sundance. Seems like the “etiquette guidelines” in pre-screening announcements need to be ramped up and made more explicit.

Is there a surprise “breakout” film this year, based on what you’ve seen or buzz you’ve heard? (Been reading some intriguing things about “A Real Pain.”)

There's probably always the option to watch something else, but I don't get the person to visit something like Sundance and then walk out of a movie because it makes them uncomfortable or something.
