Thanks for the live stream Dave and Joy. This was my first Oscar I've ever watched! (German timezone) and what a ceremony to choose. It's like being chess grandmaster and immediately announcing the retirement to go out on top.
Well said Dave. I'd only realised you had livestreamed after the fact, but still went to scrub through regardless to catch your's and Joy's reactions (which made for interesting viewing, knowing the winners while you both speculated). The effusive elation that Quan exudes in every moment continues to be heartwarming. Very poetic for him to celebrate Best Picture with Harrison Ford, while Spielberg looks on from the audience. Looking forward to the Filmcast debrief.
Great recap and agree with all of the wonderful moments seeing some of the winners. All I need go see is a photo of Michelle Yeoh or a clip of her moms reaction to ugly cry once more. While I was happy with the RRR win and speech, the performance did leave me feeling disappointed. A few days before the performance, I started hearing from many in my dance community about how none of the dancers on stage were South Asian. Many of them wanted to audition, but the choreographers went with dancers they had previously worked with. One of the dancers even mistakenly called it a Bollywood dance when in fact the song, movie and dance is squarely Tollywood (Telugu film industry). There is a lot of context of Bollywood and dominant North Indian culture hiding many nuances within South India and it was disappointing to not see the very talented and qualified dancers be given a chance on stage. This article is a good recap of this perspective https://www.indiewire.com/2023/03/oscars-naatu-naatu-performance-no-south-asian-artists-1234818690/
Other than the speeches, The most rewatchable moment is the Naatu Naatu performance. Just seeing all those dancers, of all colors, participating in dance that may appear so "foreign" to those outside of India, and create something universal and beautiful, brought tears to my eyes.
I really enjoyed synchronizing the replay of your youtube livestream with the replay of the Oscars on Hulu. Such fun! Felt like being at an Oscar Party when I missed it due to my work schedule. Hope you two do it again next year!! 😍😍

Wild to me that All Quiet won so much. That’s a bad Score win, IMO and should never have been an adapted screenplay nom.

Agreed, this was very disappointing.

Fyi: RRR is not a Bollywood film.
Yes, my fault. I edited the comment. I wrote the same thing on Dan Murrell's channel and got appropriately corrected as well.

Just tapped the "Listen" option and am so happy to have your newsletter to help me digest last night's awards ceremony as I get ready for the day.
Which app are you using?
Substack on Android. Not sure if they just added that option but it's a game changer.
Cool!
